Studio Job - Chess

Studio Job was founded in 1998 by Job Smeets in the renaissance spirit, combining traditional and modern techniques to produce once-in-a-lifetime objects. At once highly specific and yet entirely universal, personally expressive and yet experimental, Studio Job has crafted a body of work that draws upon classical, popular and contemporary design and highly visual and sculptural art.

Chess Game

Your Move

A unique edition created for the four children of a private client, four complete chess set art pieces, in casted bronze, gilding, hand-painting.

“The chess set is an iconic piece to make in an artist’s life, the masterpiece you have in an oeuvre of the classical playbook. Inspired on the 16th century masterpieces of the Grünes Gewölbe collection in Dresden, this is a collection of many elements of the work we have created over the last 20 years.

A chess set is the piece where different elements of your work come together, it’s such a complex artwork and it has to have so much but still has to balance. You have also these actors in the board that need their own identity so you can look to the full spectrum of your body of work. The Farm Collection is seen in the boot, the roses are from Faena, the horse from Chamber, and on and so forth. Retrospective elements of all of our collections are in each piece, which is composed as a little puzzle of art icons.

The sculpting, casting, hand-painting and gilding was a real labour of love, taking nearly a year in total to create, with the board itself on the texture of black and white hand sculpted details cast in bronze.”
